ACCA exemptions explained: how they work and how to check yours
How ACCA exemptions work, the maximum available, when taking one helps, when sitting the paper is smarter and how to check your entitlement.

ACCA exemptions give you credit for relevant prior study, so you start the qualification at the level that matches what you already know. Used well, they save months. Used carelessly, they create gaps that surface two papers later.
Exemptions are available for the Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exams only, up to a maximum of nine papers. No exemptions are awarded for Strategic Professional, whatever your background.
How exemptions work
ACCA awards exemptions against accredited qualifications: relevant degrees, AAT and other professional or academic awards it has assessed. The entitlement depends on the exact institution, course and modules rather than the subject title alone, which is why two accounting graduates can hold different entitlements.
Most exemptions carry a fee, normally lower than the exam entry fee. Check the current rates on the ACCA website before you budget, because they change.
How to check yours
Use the official ACCA exemptions calculator before you register. Search your institution and course, then read the result carefully, because some awards are conditional on specific modules or completion dates. Keep transcripts and certificates ready: ACCA verifies entitlement against documents, not against what a course page says today.
The calculator tells you what you can claim. It does not tell you whether claiming is wise.
When taking an exemption is the wrong move
An exemption is a head start only if the underlying knowledge is genuinely secure. The risk with a Financial Accounting exemption claimed on the strength of a degree module passed years earlier is that Financial Reporting assumes the double entry underneath it is still fluent. The exam that exposes a weak exemption is rarely the one you skipped. It is the next one in the chain.
A practical test: attempt a set of exam-standard questions in the exempt subject. If you score comfortably, take the exemption with confidence. If you do not, sitting the paper may be faster overall, because relearning foundations during a harder paper costs more time than it saves.
Common mistakes with exemptions
Claiming everything available without testing the underlying knowledge first.
Assuming exemptions guarantee a faster qualification. Momentum and pass rate per sitting matter more.
Forgetting exemption fees when comparing routes.
Missing conditional requirements attached to the calculator result.
Key points
Exemptions cover Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills only, up to nine papers.
Entitlement is course-specific. Always use the official calculator.
Exemptions usually carry fees. Check current rates.
Only take an exemption you could pass the exam for today.
How Qualifico helps
Before accepting an exemption, run yourself through question practice in that subject on Qualifico. A short diagnostic through Financial Accounting questions, for example, shows whether the exemption leaves gaps that Financial Reporting will expose later.
