What does ACCA BT test?
Business and Technology (BT) is one of three Applied Knowledge exams in the ACCA Qualification. It tests how organisations work, from structure and governance to people, systems and ethics. Broad objective-test format with mixed multi-task questions.
The main examinable areas are:
business context and stakeholders
organisational structure and culture
governance and sustainability
finance functions, systems, controls and technology
leadership and teams
personal effectiveness and communication
professional ethics
Use the official syllabus and examinable documents for your sitting. ACCA has announced a redesigned qualification from 2027, so the current paper structure and transition rules must be rechecked before a later sitting.
What makes ACCA BT challenging?
In practice, BT feels like a wide business exam. Questions may ask you to recognise a concept, apply a definition to a short scenario or choose the best response to an ethical or organisational issue. The wording can be subtle, especially where two options look plausible but only one fits the scenario.
The practical challenge in BT is breadth. A learner may understand leadership, governance or economics in isolation, then miss how these ideas affect finance work. When studying, keep asking: what would this mean for an accountant working inside the organisation?

Most preparation for ACCA BT is reading-led. You work through the material, feel like you have covered it, and still cannot say which topics would cost you marks tomorrow. Passive review hides weak areas instead of exposing them, and by the time a mock finds them there is rarely time left to fix them.

How to prepare for ACCA BT
A sensible study order
Start with the business environment and stakeholders, then move into organisation structure, governance, business functions, people management and ethics. Keep a running list of terms you confuse, such as leadership and management, internal and external stakeholders, or governance and management control.
Study BT by linking each topic to workplace examples. For a busy week, use short recall sessions for terminology, then one longer session to practise mixed questions and explain why the correct answer fits the business context.

How to use question practice
Use short objective questions throughout your study. After each set, write down why the correct answer is right and why your wrong answer was tempting. This is useful in BT because small wording differences often test whether you understand the concept rather than whether you recognise a phrase.

How to review weak areas
If BT feels vague, connect each topic to a real organisation. Ask who the stakeholders are, how the organisation is governed, what risks it faces, how finance supports decisions and what an ethical accountant should do. That turns broad theory into something more memorable.
Track BT errors by business area: governance, ethics, organisation structure, people, economics, data or control. A weekly target might be to turn three weak definitions into short examples from a real employer or client situation.
