What does CAIA Level II test?
CAIA Level II is the second and final exam in the CAIA Charter programme. It tests advanced alternatives from an allocator perspective, covering portfolio construction, due diligence and risk. Objective questions combined with constructed response.

What makes CAIA Level II challenging?
Level II moves from recognising products to making allocator decisions. Constructed responses must reach a recommendation supported by evidence, constraints, liquidity, governance and due-diligence considerations rather than simply describing a strategy.
Most preparation for CAIA Level II is reading-led. You work through the material, feel like you have covered it, and still cannot say which topics would cost you marks tomorrow. Passive review hides weak areas instead of exposing them, and by the time a mock finds them there is rarely time left to fix them.

How to prepare for CAIA Level II
How to prepare, decide or use the guidance
Write as an allocator from the first practice attempt. The most common Level II error is a technically correct paragraph that never reaches a recommendation. State the position, then support it. Writing better short answers covers the structure in detail.
Tie recommendations to liquidity and governance. These two constraints shape more Level II answers than any single asset class, because they are what stops a theoretically attractive allocation from being usable.
Compare rather than describe. Questions frequently set two managers or strategies against each other, and marks come from the comparison, not from two separate descriptions placed side by side.
Check the curriculum before you begin. CAIA refreshes emerging topics, and checking what has changed is a short task that prevents studying superseded material.
