About CFA Level I

What does CFA Level I test?

The main examinable areas are:

  • Ethical and Professional Standards

  • Quantitative Methods

  • Economics

  • Financial Statement Analysis

  • Corporate Issuers

  • Equity Investments

  • Fixed Income

  • Derivatives

  • Alternative Investments

  • Portfolio Management

What makes CFA Level I challenging?

Level I is broad: candidates must retain ten topics, switch quickly between qualitative and numerical questions and apply formulas without losing time. Familiar-looking multiple-choice options can expose weak recall or imprecise reading.

Most preparation for CFA Level I is reading-led. You work through the material, feel like you have covered it, and still cannot say which topics would cost you marks tomorrow. Passive review hides weak areas instead of exposing them, and by the time a mock finds them there is rarely time left to fix them.

Qualifico is built the other way round. Practice comes first, progress is tracked subtopic by subtopic and every attempt is scored against its subtopic, so the next study block goes where it will change your score. If time is the constraint, how to build a CFA study plan around work sets out how to fit that around a working week.

How to prepare for CFA Level I
How to prepare, decide or use the guidance

Start by building a topic map. Do not treat CFA Level I as one large block called "the syllabus". Break it into topics, then smaller learning modules. This makes progress visible and helps you avoid hiding weak areas until the end. Two companions help here: where to start in the Level I study order and the mistakes that most often cost Level I candidates.

Use active recall early. After reading a section, test whether you can explain the idea, use the formula or identify the right concept in a question. Recognition on the page is weaker than retrieval from memory.

Do not leave ethics until the final week. Ethics has its own language and judgement style. Regular short review is usually more useful than a late cram.

This is exactly what the Qualifico statistics tab does, so you do not have to keep the log yourself. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, giving you a topic breakdown you can open down to subtopic level, a predicted score set against your target mark, and a comparison against the profile of a candidate who passed. A progress chart shows whether a weak area is actually recovering, and a weekly report lands whether or not you remember to review. See what that looks like for CFA Level I.
