A complete guide to CFA Level II, and the practice built specifically for it.
How you'll prepare for CFA Level II with Qualifico

You practise from the start rather than after the reading. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, so your dashboard shows where the marks are actually going long before a mock does.

We take a data-driven approach to CFA Level II and keep expanding the material behind it for this exam.

About CFA Level II

If you are sitting CFA Level II, this page covers what the exam actually tests, where candidates lose marks and how to prepare for it around a working week. It also sets out exactly what Qualifico gives you for this paper.

Exam at a glance
  • Qualification: CFA Program

  • Stage or level: Level II

  • Duration: 4 hours 24 minutes of testing

  • Assessment style: 22 vignette-based item sets containing 88 multiple-choice questions, split into two 132-minute sessions.

What does CFA Level II test?

CFA Level II is the second exam in the CFA Program. It tests the application of investment analysis through vignette-based item sets, requiring candidates to interpret case information and select the relevant data before applying a method.

The main examinable areas are:

  • Ethical and Professional Standards

  • Quantitative Methods

  • Economics

  • Financial Statement Analysis

  • Corporate Issuers

  • Equity Investments

  • Fixed Income

  • Derivatives

  • Alternative Investments

  • Portfolio Management

What makes CFA Level II challenging?

Every question depends on a vignette, so knowing the method is not enough: candidates must find the right fact, period and input in the case. Plausible distractors often reflect a correct technique applied to the wrong data.

Most preparation for CFA Level II is reading-led. You work through the material, feel like you have covered it, and still cannot say which topics would cost you marks tomorrow. Passive review hides weak areas instead of exposing them, and by the time a mock finds them there is rarely time left to fix them.

Qualifico is built the other way round. Practice comes first, progress is tracked subtopic by subtopic and every attempt is scored against its subtopic, so the next study block goes where it will change your score. If time is the constraint, how to build a CFA study plan around work sets out how to fit that around a working week.

How to prepare for CFA Level II
How to prepare, decide or use the guidance

Read the question stem before the vignette. Knowing what is being asked tells you which parts of the case matter, and stops you absorbing three paragraphs of detail that no question touches. Practising vignettes properly covers the mechanics of this.

Mark only the data that affects an answer. Highlighting everything is the same as highlighting nothing, and it costs time you do not have across two sessions.

Review distractors, not just wrong answers. At Level II the wrong options are usually the result of a plausible mistake: the right method with the wrong input, or the right input in the wrong period. Working out which mistake a distractor was built to catch is worth more than re-reading the correct solution.

This is exactly what the Qualifico statistics tab does, so you do not have to keep the log yourself. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, giving you a topic breakdown you can open down to subtopic level, a predicted score set against your target mark, and a comparison against the profile of a candidate who passed. A progress chart shows whether a weak area is actually recovering, and a weekly report lands whether or not you remember to review. See what that looks like for CFA Level II.
