What does ACCA AA test?
Audit and Assurance (AA) is one of six Applied Skills exams in the ACCA Qualification. It tests the audit process from planning and risk to evidence, completion and reporting, plus ethics. Objective questions with scenario-based written tasks.

Use the official syllabus and examinable documents for your sitting. ACCA has announced a redesigned qualification from 2027, so the current paper structure and transition rules must be rechecked before a later sitting.
What makes ACCA AA challenging?
AA often feels unfamiliar to students who have not worked in audit. Requirements may ask you to explain a risk, describe a procedure, evaluate a control deficiency or discuss a reporting issue. The answer must be specific enough for the scenario and precise enough for audit work.
The practical challenge in AA is specificity. A procedure such as "check invoices" rarely earns much unless it says what population is tested, which document is inspected, what assertion is addressed and why the work responds to the risk.

Most preparation for ACCA AA is reading-led. You work through the material, feel like you have covered it, and still cannot say which topics would cost you marks tomorrow. Passive review hides weak areas instead of exposing them, and by the time a mock finds them there is rarely time left to fix them.

How to prepare for ACCA AA
A sensible study order
Start with assurance concepts, ethics and governance, then move into planning and risk. After that, study internal controls, audit evidence, substantive procedures, completion and reporting. Keep linking the audit work back to financial statement assertions and risks.

How to use question practice
Question practice is essential. When reviewing a procedure, ask whether it states the action, source document, assertion and purpose. When reviewing a risk, ask whether you have explained why the financial statements may be misstated rather than only describing the business problem. How to review weak areas
If your AA answers score poorly, shorten them and make them more precise. A good audit procedure usually has a clear verb, a source, a target and a reason. A good recommendation fixes the control weakness identified rather than offering generic policy advice.
Track AA errors by risk, control, procedure, ethics, evidence or reporting. If a procedure is vague, rewrite it using action, document, population, assertion and purpose.
