ACCA Advanced Financial Management (AFM): exam guide and how to prepare
A complete guide to ACCA AFM, and the practice built specifically for it.
How you'll prepare for ACCA AFM with Qualifico
You practise from the start rather than after the reading. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, so your dashboard shows where the marks are actually going long before a mock does. Written answers come back marked against that question's own mark scheme, so the feedback is about what you wrote.
We take a data-driven approach to ACCA AFM and keep expanding the material behind it, with every question and lesson reviewed by an ACCA-qualified accountant.

About ACCA AFM
If you are sitting ACCA AFM, this page covers what the exam actually tests, where candidates lose marks and how to prepare for it around a working week. It also sets out exactly what Qualifico gives you for this paper.
Exam at a glance
Qualification: ACCA
Stage or level: Strategic Professional, Options
Duration: 3 hours 15 minutes
Assessment style: One substantial case study and two further compulsory scenario questions; calculations support strategic advice.
What does ACCA AFM test?
Advanced Financial Management (AFM) is one of four ACCA Strategic Professional Options exams; candidates choose two. It tests senior finance decisions, from appraisal and valuation to restructuring and treasury risk. Fully written format mixing calculations with strategic advice.
The main examinable areas are:
the senior financial-adviser role
strategy, ESG and international finance
advanced investment appraisal
mergers and acquisitions
reconstruction
treasury and derivative-based risk management
Use the official syllabus and examinable documents for your sitting. ACCA has announced a redesigned qualification from 2027, so the current paper structure and transition rules must be rechecked before a later sitting.
What makes ACCA AFM challenging?
AFM feels like a corporate finance advisory paper. You may value a business, assess an investment, evaluate financing choices, consider a takeover or recommend a risk management strategy. Professional skills are demonstrated through clear, relevant advice and not through calculation alone.
The practical challenge in AFM is controlling large workings without losing the advisory point. If a valuation, APV or hedge calculation becomes messy, state assumptions clearly and keep writing short conclusions as you go.
weak FM foundations in investment appraisal, cost of capital and risk
large calculations without a clear recommendation
ignoring assumptions, strategic fit or stakeholder impact
not explaining what the figures mean for the decision-maker
Most preparation for ACCA AFM is reading-led. You work through the material, feel like you have covered it, and still cannot say which topics would cost you marks tomorrow. Passive review hides weak areas instead of exposing them, and by the time a mock finds them there is rarely time left to fix them.
Qualifico is built the other way round. Practice comes first, progress is tracked subtopic by subtopic and written answers are marked against the question's own mark scheme, so the next study block goes where it will change your score. If time is the constraint, how to study for ACCA around work sets out how to fit that around a working week.

How to prepare for ACCA AFM
A sensible study order
Refresh FM before starting the advanced material. Then study investment appraisal, valuation, mergers, financing, reorganisation and risk management. Build a formula sheet, but make sure every formula is attached to a decision and an interpretation.
Study AFM by refreshing FM foundations first, then building advanced techniques around decision types: invest, value, finance, reorganise, hedge or advise. Each technical session should end with a recommendation paragraph.
You do not have to build that order yourself. Qualifico maps ACCA AFM to 30 guided lessons, one for every subtopic, in syllabus order, and tracks a syllabus-covered figure so you can see how much ground you have genuinely worked through rather than how much you have read.
How to use question practice
Practise calculations in a way that supports advice. Label workings, state assumptions and write a conclusion even when the numbers are incomplete. In debrief, ask whether your answer helped the decision-maker or merely displayed technique.
Official resources, including the Study Hub and Practice Platform, are the place to rehearse the exam environment. Qualifico tells you which topics are costing you marks before you get there.
Qualifico gives you both modes of this. A relaxed set while you are still learning, where you see the explanation as you go, and a timed practice exam that locks each answer and marks at the end, which is the one that tells you whether you can work at exam pace. Constructed answers are marked against that question's own mark scheme, with a model answer beside yours, so you can see the specific points you missed rather than guessing from a specimen.
How to review weak areas
If AFM feels too technical, break questions into decision, data, method and recommendation. The method is only one part. You also need to decide what the organisation is trying to achieve and whether the result is commercially sensible.
Track AFM mistakes by technique and decision. Separate errors in set-up, calculation, assumptions and advice. A useful review action is to write the recommendation even when the calculation was incomplete.
This is exactly what the Qualifico statistics tab does, so you do not have to keep the log yourself. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, giving you a topic breakdown you can open down to subtopic level, a predicted score set against the pass mark, and a comparison against the profile of a candidate who passed. A progress chart shows whether a weak area is actually recovering, and a weekly report lands whether or not you remember to review. See what that looks like for ACCA AFM.
Strategic Professional technique
For AFM, Strategic Professional technique means giving advice even when the calculation is imperfect. Label workings, state assumptions and write interim conclusions so the marker can see your reasoning and commercial judgement. For which calculations carry the marks, see the AFM calculations that matter most.
Qualifico's written response mode is built for this. You write the answer, and the marking comes back against that question's mark scheme, showing the points your answer did not make. That is the part of ACCA AFM that is hardest to rehearse alone, because a model answer alone never tells you what your answer was missing.
How Qualifico supports Advanced Financial Management (AFM)
Qualifico covers ACCA AFM with 578 practice questions, 147 flashcards and 30 guided lessons, one for every subtopic. 31 of those are written response tasks, marked against the question's own mark scheme with a model answer beside yours.
