ACCA Advanced Taxation (ATX-UK): exam guide and how to prepare
A complete guide to ACCA ATX, and the practice built specifically for it.
How you'll prepare for ACCA ATX with Qualifico
You practise from the start rather than after the reading. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, so your dashboard shows where the marks are actually going long before a mock does. Written answers come back marked against that question's own mark scheme, so the feedback is about what you wrote.
We take a data-driven approach to ACCA ATX and keep expanding the material behind it, with every question and lesson reviewed by an ACCA-qualified accountant.

Stage or level: Strategic Professional, Options
Duration: 3 hours 15 minutes
Assessment style: One substantial multi-tax case and two further compulsory scenario questions for the UK variant.
What does ACCA ATX-UK test?
Advanced Taxation – United Kingdom (ATX-UK) is the UK tax paper and one of four ACCA Strategic Professional Options exams; candidates choose two. It tests advising individuals and businesses on UK tax consequences, including planning across the main taxes. Fully written constructed response format.
The main examinable areas are:
advanced UK personal and business taxation
overseas matters, trusts, groups and stamp taxes
interaction of taxes
tax advice and planning
ethics and compliance
Use the official syllabus and examinable documents for your sitting. ACCA has announced a redesigned qualification from 2027, so the current paper structure and transition rules must be rechecked before a later sitting.
What makes ACCA ATX-UK challenging?
ATX feels like a tax advisory paper. The scenario may involve owners, companies, groups, disposals, investment plans, remuneration, succession, residence or cross-tax interactions. A good answer explains the tax impact and gives practical advice, not just a computation.
The practical challenge in ATX is handling interaction. A decision may affect income tax, corporation tax, capital gains tax, VAT, inheritance tax or timing at the same time. Plan the answer before writing so the advice is coherent.
using outdated tax rules, rates or allowances
weak TX foundations in the relevant variant
answering a computation requirement when advice is being requested
missing interactions between taxes, timing and client objectives
Most preparation for ACCA ATX is reading-led. You work through the material, feel like you have covered it, and still cannot say which topics would cost you marks tomorrow. Passive review hides weak areas instead of exposing them, and by the time a mock finds them there is rarely time left to fix them.
Qualifico is built the other way round. Practice comes first, progress is tracked subtopic by subtopic and written answers are marked against the question's own mark scheme, so the next study block goes where it will change your score. If time is the constraint, how to study for ACCA around work sets out how to fit that around a working week.

How to prepare for ACCA ATX-UK
A sensible study order
Begin by checking the official materials for your variant and sitting. Refresh the TX foundations, then move into advanced planning, interactions and advice. Keep separate notes for conditions, deadlines and reliefs that are easily confused.
Study ATX with current variant materials and a client-advice mindset. Build tax-area knowledge first, then practise planning questions where several taxes, timings and risks interact.
You do not have to build that order yourself. Qualifico maps ACCA ATX to 27 guided lessons, one for every subtopic, in syllabus order, and tracks a syllabus-covered figure so you can see how much ground you have genuinely worked through rather than how much you have read.
How to use question practice
Practise advisory writing. After each computation, add a short paragraph explaining what the result means for the client and what action may be available. When debriefing, check whether you answered the client objective or only displayed tax knowledge.
Official resources, including the Study Hub and Practice Platform, are the place to rehearse the exam environment. Qualifico tells you which topics are costing you marks before you get there.
Qualifico gives you both modes of this. A relaxed set while you are still learning, where you see the explanation as you go, and a timed practice exam that locks each answer and marks at the end, which is the one that tells you whether you can work at exam pace. Constructed answers are marked against that question's own mark scheme, with a model answer beside yours, so you can see the specific points you missed rather than guessing from a specimen.
How to review weak areas
If ATX feels unstable, audit your materials first. Tax is time-sensitive, so wrong or outdated notes can waste weeks. Then identify whether your weakness is technical rules, computation layout, planning judgement or written communication.
Track ATX mistakes by tax, interaction, timing and advice quality. If a planning answer missed risk, add a note on compliance, cash flow, client objective or uncertainty rather than only correcting the computation.
This is exactly what the Qualifico statistics tab does, so you do not have to keep the log yourself. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, giving you a topic breakdown you can open down to subtopic level, a predicted score set against the pass mark, and a comparison against the profile of a candidate who passed. A progress chart shows whether a weak area is actually recovering, and a weekly report lands whether or not you remember to review. See what that looks like for ACCA ATX.
Strategic Professional technique
For ATX, Strategic Professional technique means client-focused advice. Structure the answer by decision, tax effect, timing, risk and recommendation. Avoid unsupported tax claims and keep variant rules current. Much of the underlying computation discipline is the same as TX, and how to pass ACCA TX covers the errors that cost most marks.
Qualifico's written response mode is built for this. You write the answer, and the marking comes back against that question's mark scheme, showing the points your answer did not make. That is the part of ACCA ATX that is hardest to rehearse alone, because a model answer alone never tells you what your answer was missing.
