ACCA Financial Management (FM): exam guide and how to prepare
A complete guide to ACCA FM, and the practice built specifically for it.
How you'll prepare for ACCA FM with Qualifico
You practise from the start rather than after the reading. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, so your dashboard shows where the marks are actually going long before a mock does. Written answers come back marked against that question's own mark scheme, so the feedback is about what you wrote.
We take a data-driven approach to ACCA FM and keep expanding the material behind it, with every question and lesson reviewed by an ACCA-qualified accountant.

About ACCA FM
If you are sitting ACCA FM, this page covers what the exam actually tests, where candidates lose marks and how to prepare for it around a working week. It also sets out exactly what Qualifico gives you for this paper.
Exam at a glance
Qualification: ACCA
Stage or level: Applied Skills
Duration: 3 hours
Assessment style: Computer-based; objective questions, case-based objective questions and constructed-response tasks.
What does ACCA FM test?
Financial Management (FM) is one of six Applied Skills exams in the ACCA Qualification. It tests financing, investment and working capital decisions, from appraisal to risk management. Objective questions plus longer tasks blending calculation and written advice.
The main examinable areas are:
the financial-management role and environment
working capital
investment appraisal
finance and cost of capital
business valuation
foreign-exchange and interest-rate risk management
Use the official syllabus and examinable documents for your sitting. ACCA has announced a redesigned qualification from 2027, so the current paper structure and transition rules must be rechecked before a later sitting.
What makes ACCA FM challenging?
FM can feel formula-heavy, but the better candidates understand what the formula is trying to answer. A net present value, receivables calculation, valuation or hedge is not just a number. It supports a recommendation and often has assumptions or limitations.
The practical challenge in FM is linking technique to judgement. A positive NPV, a working capital movement or a hedge result needs a recommendation, caveat or risk comment. The mark often sits in the sentence after the calculation.
learning formulas without understanding the decision being made
weak time value of money and discounting technique
forgetting working capital is about cash flow and control, not only ratios
writing conclusions that ignore risk, assumptions and non-financial factors
Most preparation for ACCA FM is reading-led. You work through the material, feel like you have covered it, and still cannot say which topics would cost you marks tomorrow. Passive review hides weak areas instead of exposing them, and by the time a mock finds them there is rarely time left to fix them.
Qualifico is built the other way round. Practice comes first, progress is tracked subtopic by subtopic and written answers are marked against the question's own mark scheme, so the next study block goes where it will change your score. If time is the constraint, how to study for ACCA around work sets out how to fit that around a working week.

How to prepare for ACCA FM
A sensible study order
Build time value of money and investment appraisal early. Then study working capital, sources of finance, cost of capital, valuations and risk management. Keep revisiting the purpose of each technique because FM questions often combine calculation and discussion.
Study FM by building a small bank of standard workings, then attaching interpretation to each. For example, do not stop at NPV, cost of capital or receivables days. Add the decision, risk and management action.
You do not have to build that order yourself. Qualifico maps ACCA FM to 28 guided lessons, one for every subtopic, in syllabus order, and tracks a syllabus-covered figure so you can see how much ground you have genuinely worked through rather than how much you have read.
How to use question practice
Practise calculations in a spreadsheet-style layout and write a short conclusion for each one. Do not wait until the final weeks to practise discussion requirements. The discussion marks often test whether you understand the result, not whether you can repeat a definition. For the calculation-to-recommendation step, see how to pass ACCA FM.
Official resources, including the Study Hub and Practice Platform, are the place to rehearse the exam environment. Qualifico tells you which topics are costing you marks before you get there.
Qualifico gives you both modes of this. A relaxed set while you are still learning, where you see the explanation as you go, and a timed practice exam that locks each answer and marks at the end, which is the one that tells you whether you can work at exam pace. Constructed answers are marked against that question's own mark scheme, with a model answer beside yours, so you can see the specific points you missed rather than guessing from a specimen.
How to review weak areas
If FM feels difficult, separate technique from judgement. Technique problems need repeated worked examples. Judgement problems need debriefing: what does the number imply, what assumption is fragile and what else should management consider?
Track FM mistakes by topic and decision: working capital, investment appraisal, finance source, valuation or risk. Add a short note on what the number means so the next practice session trains judgement as well as calculation.
This is exactly what the Qualifico statistics tab does, so you do not have to keep the log yourself. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, giving you a topic breakdown you can open down to subtopic level, a predicted score set against the pass mark, and a comparison against the profile of a candidate who passed. A progress chart shows whether a weak area is actually recovering, and a weekly report lands whether or not you remember to review. See what that looks like for ACCA FM.
