CII IF3: Insurance underwriting process exam guide
Follow a risk from presentation to acceptance, pricing and renewal

How you'll prepare for CII IF3 with Qualifico
You practise from the start rather than after the reading. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, so your dashboard shows where the marks are actually going long before a mock does.
We take a data-driven approach to CII IF3 and keep expanding the material behind it for this exam.

About CII IF3
IF3 Insurance underwriting process follows a risk from the moment it is presented to an insurer to the point where it is accepted on agreed terms, priced and managed over its life. It suits anyone working in or alongside underwriting, including brokers who present risks to insurers and need to know what an underwriter will ask.
If you are still choosing units, the Certificate in Insurance guide compares all four.
Exam at a glance
Format: 75 multiple-choice questions in two hours, about 96 seconds each.
Level and credits: Level 3, 15 CII credits; CII estimates around 60 hours of study.
Pass mark: the standard pass mark is 70%.
Source: CII's IF3 unit page. With fewer questions in the same time as IF1 and IF2, you have more time per question, and some will need it to work through a risk description.
What does CII IF3 test?
The syllabus covers the role of underwriting in identifying, assessing and accepting risk. Its learning outcomes run through material circumstances, underwriting procedures, policy wordings and their use, renewals and cancellation, personal and commercial insurance, support-type insurance services, underwriting considerations, the principles and practice of pricing, pricing factors and managing exposure.
What makes CII IF3 challenging?
Pricing and underwriting judgement are connected but not the same. A higher premium does not make every risk acceptable, and a familiar product name does not tell you the terms that apply. The useful habit is to name the decision being made at each stage: whether to accept, on what terms, at what price, and what happens when the risk changes.
Two risks with the same sum insured
Two small commercial risks have the same sum insured. The first has recently improved its fire protection and has sent up-to-date surveys. The second has started a new manufacturing activity and has not described what it involves.
The same sum insured says nothing about equal risk. For the second case, the useful response identifies the missing information about the new activity, which part of the exposure it affects and how it could change the terms. Inventing an acceptance decision or a premium from incomplete facts would be the wrong answer. Change one fact at a time, such as a claims history or a change of premises, and explain whether it affects the exposure, the quality of the information or the terms.

How to prepare for CII IF3
Build the underwriting lifecycle as a sequence: information about the risk, assessment, acceptance and terms, pricing, policy administration, renewal and cancellation. For each topic, write four things: the information needed, why it matters, the decision it informs and what goes wrong without it.
For pricing questions, label the inputs and say what the result can and cannot tell you. Keep input errors and arithmetic errors in separate columns of your error log, because choosing the wrong exposure is not fixed by faster multiplication. Use varied risks in practice so the chapter title does not give the answer away. How to study for CII IF1–IF4 covers the wider routine.
How Qualifico supports CII IF3
Qualifico provides IF3 practice questions and flashcards across the underwriting lifecycle. Scenario questions are the best use of it here, because they make you name the decision before choosing an answer. Practice scores describe the questions you attempted; they do not predict CII's result.
Where IF3 fits
IF3 counts as an option unit and adds 15 credits. It is not a prerequisite for IF4: you can take either, or both, depending on whether your work is closer to accepting risks or handling claims.
