About CII IF4

IF4 Insurance claims handling process follows a claim from the first notification to settlement. It covers what the claims handler needs to know, check and decide, and why each step matters to the customer and the insurer. It suits claims handlers, loss adjusters, brokers' claims teams and anyone who needs to explain how claims are decided.

What does CII IF4 test?

Seven learning outcomes: the general principles of claims handling; insurance products and the services around them; how claims are considered and administered; claims procedures and related services; claims handling operations; settlement; and how claims expenses are managed.

What makes CII IF4 challenging?

Every claim raises three separate questions: did the event happen as described, does the policy cover it, and how much is payable? Evidence that answers one rarely answers the others. A common trap is an option that answers the right question with the wrong evidence, or settles the amount before cover has been confirmed.

Different classes of insurance also need different information. A property claim is a poor model for a liability claim, where a third party's allegation and legal liability come into play.

A worked example: the repair estimate

A customer reports water damage to their kitchen and sends a repair estimate. The estimate helps with the amount. It does not show when the damage happened, what caused it or whether the policy covers that cause.

A good response separates the three questions and lists what is needed for each: details of the event and its cause, the relevant policy wording and any conditions, and a basis for assessing the cost. Now change the facts so the cause is clear and covered but the amount is disputed: the next request for information changes too. Practising that shift guards against answering from a memorised checklist.

How to prepare for CII IF4

Study a claim as a sequence: notification, information gathering, cover assessment, quantification and settlement. At each stage ask what is known, what needs checking and what can reasonably be decided now.

For calculations, identify the relevant limit, excess or other adjustment from the facts and the method in your study text, and set out the steps before working quickly. When you get a question wrong, record whether it was policy interpretation, insufficient evidence, the settlement method or a procedural step, and go back to the principle before repeating the question. The routine in how to study for CII IF1–IF4 applies here too.
