What does SQE1 FLK1 test?
SQE1 Functioning Legal Knowledge 1 (FLK1) is one of the two Functioning Legal Knowledge assessments in SQE1. It tests functioning legal knowledge in practical scenarios across public law, dispute resolution, contract, tort, business law and ethics. Single best answer format.
The main examinable areas are:
Business Law and Practice
Dispute Resolution
Contract
Tort
the Legal System of England and Wales
Legal Services
ethics and professional conduct across the assessment
Use the SRA specification that applies to your assessment window, because detailed examinable law and practice can change.
What makes SQE1 FLK1 challenging?
FLK1 combines foundational law with practice-focused procedure and regulation. Five plausible options mean candidates must identify the client objective and controlling legal issue before selecting the single best answer.
Most preparation for SQE1 FLK1 is reading-led. You work through the material, feel like you have covered it, and still cannot say which topics would cost you marks tomorrow. Passive review hides weak areas instead of exposing them, and by the time a mock finds them there is rarely time left to fix them.
Qualifico is built the other way round. Practice comes first, progress is tracked subtopic by subtopic and every attempt is scored against its subtopic, so the next study block goes where it will change your score. If time is the constraint, how to study for SQE1 around work sets out how to fit that around a working week.

How to prepare for SQE1 FLK1
How to prepare or use this guidance
Build a topic map before you start deep revision. FLK1 can feel overwhelming if every subject is treated as a separate pile of notes. A map helps you see where subjects connect. For example, business taxation sits naturally with Business Law and Practice, while contract and tort often feed into dispute resolution scenarios. Read the question format closely in how to read the stem, lead-in and options.
Use three layers of study. First, learn the core rule or process. Second, apply it to short facts. Third, review why similar answers are wrong. SQE1 distractors are plausible by design, so improvement often comes from learning the difference between a broadly true statement and the best answer to the question asked.
This is exactly what the Qualifico statistics tab does, so you do not have to keep the log yourself. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, giving you a topic breakdown you can open down to subtopic level, a predicted score set against your target mark, and a comparison against the profile of a candidate who passed. A progress chart shows whether a weak area is actually recovering, and a weekly report lands whether or not you remember to review. See what that looks like for SQE1 FLK1.
