What does SQE1 FLK2 test?

SQE1 Functioning Legal Knowledge 2 (FLK2) is one of the two Functioning Legal Knowledge assessments in SQE1. It tests functioning legal knowledge across property, wills and trusts, criminal law and practice, solicitors accounts and conduct. Single best answer format.

The main examinable areas are:

  • Property Law and Practice

  • Wills and the Administration of Estates

  • Solicitors Accounts

  • Land Law

  • Trusts Law

  • Criminal Liability

  • Criminal Law and Practice

  • ethics and professional conduct across the assessment

Use the SRA specification that applies to your assessment window, because detailed examinable law and practice can change.

What makes SQE1 FLK2 challenging?

FLK2 is sensitive to chronology, formalities, title, procedure and money movement. Property, estates, accounts and criminal-practice questions often turn on one controlling fact or the stage a matter has reached.

Most preparation for SQE1 FLK2 is reading-led. You work through the material, feel like you have covered it, and still cannot say which topics would cost you marks tomorrow. Passive review hides weak areas instead of exposing them, and by the time a mock finds them there is rarely time left to fix them.

Qualifico is built the other way round. Practice comes first, progress is tracked subtopic by subtopic and every attempt is scored against its subtopic, so the next study block goes where it will change your score. If time is the constraint, how to study for SQE1 around work sets out how to fit that around a working week.

How to prepare for SQE1 FLK2
How to prepare or use this guidance

Approach FLK2 as an application exam, not a definition test. You need to know the rules, but the question will usually ask what follows from specific facts. That is especially important in areas such as title, priorities, trusts, wills, client money treatment and criminal procedure. Solicitors accounts deserve their own routine, covered in how to practise solicitors accounts little and often.

Practise reading for controlling facts. In a property question, ask who owns what, what is registered, what has been signed and what stage the transaction has reached. In a wills or trust question, ask whether the formality, capacity or beneficial entitlement point is decisive. In a criminal procedure question, check the stage of the process before choosing the next step.

This is exactly what the Qualifico statistics tab does, so you do not have to keep the log yourself. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, giving you a topic breakdown you can open down to subtopic level, a predicted score set against your target mark, and a comparison against the profile of a candidate who passed. A progress chart shows whether a weak area is actually recovering, and a weekly report lands whether or not you remember to review. See what that looks like for SQE1 FLK2.
