How to study for SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP
A SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP study routine built on the exam's published blueprint, with BASK-led recall, U.S. employment law and situational judgment practice from week one.

SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP can be prepared for with one routine, provided it does two jobs: it keeps HR knowledge retrievable, and it trains you to pick the most effective action in a scenario. It is tempting to do the first job thoroughly and leave the second to the final month. The exam's own weighting argues against that.
Let the exam's split set your time
SHRM's 2026 certification handbook publishes the same blueprint for both levels:
By item type: situational judgment 40%, HR-specific knowledge 50% and foundational knowledge of the behavioural competencies 10%.
By content: Leadership 19%, Business 17.5% and Interpersonal 13.5% across the competency clusters; People 19%, Organization 18% and Workplace 13% across the knowledge domains.
Two consequences follow. Judgement practice deserves a share of every study week from the start, because it is 40% of the exam. And the behavioural competencies are not soft background reading: half of the exam's content is built on them.
If your HR experience is outside the US
The Workplace domain in the 2026 SHRM BASK includes U.S. Employment Law & Regulations, with examples such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. If your working knowledge comes from UK law, treat this as new material with its own vocabulary. Familiar ideas such as discrimination or redundancy consultation do not carry over rule for rule.
Make knowledge retrievable
Organise notes by the BASK functional areas, such as Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards or Employee & Labor Relations, and learn neighbouring ideas as pairs. For each pair, write one line on the purpose of each and one situation where the difference changes what you would do. Then close the notes and reproduce the distinction from memory.
If you can define a term but cannot say which fact in a scenario would bring it into play, add an example rather than a longer definition. Flashcards help with recall; they do not replace the example.
Practise judgement from week one
Each situational judgment item asks for the best or most effective course of action, and SHRM gives credit only for that option. Review every question in four lines: the HR issue, the facts that matter, why the chosen action fits, and why the strongest alternative does not.
When you get one wrong, decide whether you were missing knowledge or misreading the situation. A knowledge gap goes back to the BASK and your notes. A judgement error, such as acting before gathering facts or assuming authority the scenario did not give you, needs fresh scenarios rather than more reading. The method is set out in full, with worked examples at both levels, in how to review SHRM situational judgment items.
Adjust the routine for your level
For SHRM-CP, ask whether an answer is something an HR professional can carry out within the role described. For SHRM-SCP, ask what the organisation needs, what evidence supports the choice and how you would know it worked. Use official sample questions for your own level, because the scenarios are where the two exams diverge.
The final month
SHRM offers half-length preview exams for both levels as well as sample questions. Use them to check pacing under the real structure: two sections of up to 110 minutes, with no return to the first section once you move on. Review flagged questions before you leave each section, because unused time does not carry over.
Qualifico's SHRM practice covers knowledge and scenario questions for both levels, with flashcards for recall. Its scores reflect the questions you attempted; they are not a forecast of SHRM's scaled result.
