SHRM-CP exam: structure and operational HR preparation
Apply HR knowledge to operational decisions

How you'll prepare for SHRM-CP with Qualifico
You practise from the start rather than after the reading. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, so your dashboard shows where the marks are actually going long before a mock does.
We take a data-driven approach to SHRM-CP and keep expanding the material behind it for this exam.

About the SHRM-CP exam
SHRM Certified Professional is SHRM's certification for HR work at an operational level: applying policies, supporting day-to-day HR services and acting as a point of contact for staff and managers. The exam tests HR knowledge and the judgement to use it in realistic workplace situations.
If you are unsure whether the operational or strategic level suits you, read SHRM-CP vs SHRM-SCP first.
Exam at a glance
Questions: 134 multiple-choice: 80 knowledge items and 54 situational judgment items, with unscored field-test items mixed in.
Time: two separately timed sections of up to 110 minutes each.
Navigation: once you leave a section you cannot return to it, and unused time does not carry over.
Scoring: scaled from 120 to 200; every pass is reported as 200.
Delivery: computer-based at Prometric test centres.

What does SHRM-CP test?
The exam is built on the SHRM BASK. Half of it covers the behavioural competency clusters (Leadership 19%, Business 17.5%, Interpersonal 13.5%) and half the HR knowledge domains (People 19%, Organization 18%, Workplace 13%). By item type, 40% is situational judgment, 50% HR-specific knowledge and 10% foundational knowledge of the competencies.
The knowledge domains cover areas such as talent acquisition, total rewards, employee and labor relations, workforce management and risk management. The Workplace domain includes U.S. Employment Law & Regulations, which candidates who work under UK law need to learn as new material.
What makes SHRM-CP challenging?
Situational judgment items usually offer several reasonable actions, and only the best or most effective one earns credit. The common trap is answering from your own workplace: the scenario may give you less authority, fewer facts or a different policy than you are used to. Read the role, the authority and the immediate need before the options.
The other trap is level. CP questions want the next operational step, not an organisation-wide initiative. A long-term programme can be a good idea and still be the wrong answer to "what should the HR professional do now?"
An operational scenario to practise with
A line manager reports repeated absence in their team and asks HR to issue a standard warning straight away. The scenario says nothing about the pattern of absence, the relevant policy, earlier conversations or the employee's circumstances.
The stronger response gathers that information and applies the absence process before deciding anything. Issuing the warning immediately treats a missing fact as known. Now change the scenario so it states an immediate safety risk or a clear legal obligation: the right next step may change, and if your answer does not, you were following a rule of thumb rather than the facts.

How to prepare for SHRM-CP
Use the BASK to map what you know and what you have only seen in one workplace. Build short retrieval notes for each functional area, and pair neighbouring ideas so you can say which fact in a scenario separates them.
Practise situational judgment items from the first week. For each, write the issue, the facts that matter, the action you chose and why the strongest alternative is weaker. Keep the error log split between knowledge gaps and judgement errors, because they need different repairs. The method is set out in how to review SHRM situational judgment items, and a study routine in how to study for SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP.
In the final month, use SHRM's sample questions and half-length preview exam to rehearse section timing, reviewing flagged questions before you leave each section.
How Qualifico supports SHRM-CP
Qualifico gives you knowledge and scenario questions written at the operational level, with flashcards for the terms and principles that need to be instant. Use the explanations to test your reasoning, then use SHRM's official samples to check you are reading questions the way SHRM writes them. Qualifico scores are not SHRM scaled scores.
Eligibility and certification
Under SHRM's eligibility criteria, you do not need an HR title, a degree or previous HR experience to sit SHRM-CP, although a working knowledge of HR is recommended. The credential runs on a three-year cycle: you recertify by earning 60 professional development credits or retaking the exam.
Official resources and next step
Keep the handbook, the BASK and SHRM's sample questions as your reference points. If your role sets policy rather than applying it, compare the SHRM-SCP exam guide before booking.
