CAPM exam: structure, topics and preparation
Foundations across predictive, agile and business analysis work

How you'll prepare for CAPM with Qualifico
You practise from the start rather than after the reading. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, so your dashboard shows where the marks are actually going long before a mock does.
We take a data-driven approach to CAPM and keep expanding the material behind it for this exam.

About the CAPM exam
The Certified Associate in Project Management is PMI's entry-level certification. It tests foundational knowledge across traditional and agile project work and business analysis, and it needs no project experience. It has its own content outline: PMP's July 2026 changes did not apply to CAPM.
If you are deciding between the two, PMP vs CAPM compares them.
Exam at a glance
Questions: 150, of which 15 are unscored pretest questions.
Time: three hours, about 72 seconds per question.
Break: one 10-minute break after question 75. Once you start it, you cannot return to the first 75 questions.
Item types: multiple-choice, drag-and-drop matching, hot spot questions and animations or comic strips. Candidates sitting online see comic strips in place of animations.

What does the CAPM exam test?
Four domains, weighted as follows:
Project management fundamentals and core concepts (36%): project roles, life cycles, planning, risk, stakeholders and the difference between a project and ongoing operations.
Predictive, plan-based methodologies (17%): how scope, schedule, cost and controls fit together, including reading progress figures.
Agile frameworks and methodologies (20%): iterative delivery, team roles, backlogs and feedback.
Business analysis frameworks (27%): stakeholder needs, requirements, acceptance and whether the delivered solution meets the need.
Business analysis is the second-largest domain, so give it practice time to match.
What makes the CAPM exam challenging?
Questions put familiar terms into unfamiliar situations. Knowing what a work breakdown structure or a product backlog is will not help unless you can tell when the scenario calls for one. Answering every question through the approach you use at work causes similar problems: a predictive answer to an agile scenario, or the reverse.
A worked calculation
Earned value questions reward knowing what a number means; producing it is the easy part. Say planned value is £10,000, earned value is £8,000 and actual cost is £9,000.
Cost variance = earned value − actual cost = £8,000 − £9,000 = −£1,000. The work done has cost more than it was worth.
Schedule variance = earned value − planned value = £8,000 − £10,000 = −£2,000. Less work has been completed than planned.
Two things are easy to get wrong. Schedule variance is expressed in money, so it does not tell you the project is two days or two weeks late. And the £9,000 actually spent tells you nothing about how much work was done; earned value does that. Before calculating any measure, say which question it answers, and after calculating, change one input and predict which way the result moves.

How to prepare for the CAPM exam
Map your study to the four domains and test the fundamentals early, since every other domain depends on them. Learn neighbouring terms in pairs, such as risk and issue or backlog and schedule, writing the fact in a scenario that tells them apart.
Bring in short scenario questions while you learn, then mixed sets across all four domains once the basics hold. Review lucky guesses as well as wrong answers. Practise the interactive formats separately with PMI's sample questions, so a good score on standard multiple-choice does not hide unfamiliarity with drag-and-drop or hot spots. How to study for CAPM covers resources, concept pairs and the 23-hour education requirement.
How Qualifico supports the CAPM exam
Qualifico provides CAPM practice questions and flashcards across all four domains, including earned value. It does not reproduce animations, comic strips, hot spots or drag-and-drop, and a Qualifico score is not PMI's result.
Eligibility and certification
PMI requires a secondary education qualification, a minimum age of 18 and at least 23 hours of project management education completed before the exam. PMI's own on-demand and instructor-led CAPM courses meet the education requirement; Qualifico practice does not. CAPM holders maintain the certification with 15 professional development units every three years.
Official resources and next step
Start with PMI's CAPM exam preparation page for the outline, handbook and sample questions. Once you meet PMP's experience requirement, the PMP exam guide covers the next step.
