PMP vs CAPM: qualification structure and career fit
Compare PMP and CAPM on eligibility, exam format, content and maintenance, and decide whether CAPM is worth taking before PMP.

CAPM is PMI's entry-level certification and needs no project experience. PMP is for people who already lead projects and can prove it on the application. That one difference settles most decisions; the rest comes down to which exam teaches what you need next.
The two at a glance
Who sits it. CAPM suits people new to project work or supporting a project team. PMP suits practitioners who lead and direct projects.
Eligibility. CAPM: secondary education, age 18 or over and 23 hours of project management education before the exam. PMP: between 24 and 60 months of experience leading projects within the last ten years, depending on education, plus 35 hours of project management training.
Exam. CAPM: 150 questions in three hours, with one 10-minute break. PMP: 180 questions in 240 minutes, with two 10-minute breaks.
Content. CAPM: project management fundamentals 36%, predictive methods 17%, agile frameworks 20% and business analysis 27%. PMP (July 2026 outline): People 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26%.
Maintenance. CAPM: 15 professional development units every three years. PMP: 60 every three years.
Eligibility usually decides it
PMP's experience requirement depends on your highest education. It is 60 months with secondary education, 48 with an associate's degree or vocational trade school diploma, 36 with a bachelor's degree and 24 with a degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center (GAC) programme. Only time spent leading projects counts, it must fall within the last ten years, and overlapping projects count once. Ten years in a role that touched projects is not the same as ten years of project leadership.
The training requirement has a useful shortcut. An active CAPM certification covers PMP's 35 hours of training, although it does nothing for the experience requirement. If you are a year or two away from PMP eligibility, CAPM now can remove the separate training step later, provided you keep it active.
One date to note if you plan to buy PMP training: from 1 December 2026, live instructor-led training only counts if it comes from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited academic programme. Self-paced courses from any provider still qualify, and training completed before that date is assessed under the current rules.
What each exam asks of you
Imagine a customer asks for a new feature halfway through a project. A CAPM question might ask you to identify the stakeholder, the requirement and the process that should handle the change. A PMP question is more likely to ask what the project manager should do next, given the delivery approach, the team's capacity and the business case for the project, and to offer several actions that would all be sensible at some point.
Neither exam is a vocabulary test. CAPM applies concepts to short scenarios, and its business analysis domain is larger than either its predictive or its agile domain. PMP expects judgement under constraints, and since July 2026 a quarter of its content sits in the Business Environment domain, covering value delivery, organisational change and wider context.
Should you take CAPM first?
CAPM is not a required step before PMP. It makes sense when:
you cannot yet meet PMP's experience requirement and want a structured foundation now;
requirements and business analysis are a real part of your job;
you expect to need PMP's 35 training hours within a few years and would rather earn a credential on the way.
Go straight to PMP when you already meet the experience requirement and can document each project. Taking CAPM first would add an exam without adding much that PMP preparation will not cover.
Neither credential guarantees a role or salary change. The more useful question is which syllabus closes a gap in the work you do now.
Preparing for either exam
The study approach differs. How to study for CAPM focuses on making terminology usable across all four domains. How to study for the current PMP exam covers the July 2026 changes, decision questions and the newer item types. The CAPM and PMP exam guides set out each format in detail.
Qualifico has practice questions and flashcards for CAPM and PMP. They do not count towards PMI's education or training hours, and Qualifico has no role in validating an application.
