You practise from the start rather than after the reading. Every answer is scored against the subtopic it came from, so your dashboard shows where the marks are actually going long before a mock does.

We take a data-driven approach to CII IF2 and keep expanding the material behind it for this exam.

About CII IF2

IF2 General insurance business looks at how a general insurer or broker works day to day: the products it sells, how risks are underwritten and priced, how claims are handled and how customers and their data are looked after. It is the broadest of the option units in the Certificate in Insurance, so it pairs naturally with either IF3 or IF4.

The Certificate in Insurance guide explains how IF2 combines with the other units.

Exam at a glance
  • Format: 100 multiple-choice questions in two hours, about 72 seconds each.

  • Level and credits: Level 3, 15 CII credits; CII estimates around 60 hours of study.

  • Pass mark: the standard pass mark is 70%.

  • Scope: general insurance only. Life insurance is outside the syllabus.

What does CII IF2 test?

Seven learning outcomes: insurance products and associated services; underwriting and policy wordings; the principles of premium calculation applied to given scenarios; claims handling; the policy conditions that affect claims; information and communication technology, security, confidential information and data protection; and customer service.

What makes CII IF2 challenging?

The topics are connected, and questions move between them. A premium calculation does not tell you whether a loss is covered, and a correct reading of the cover does not tell you whether the customer's data was handled properly. Before answering, decide which part of the business the question is actually about.

The other challenge is the less technical outcomes. Data protection, information security and customer service are easy to leave until the last week because products and premiums feel more substantial, but they are full learning outcomes.

A premium calculation

Suppose a question gives a rate of £2 per £1,000 of sum insured, a sum insured of £80,000 and a 10% discount on the base premium. The base premium is 80 × £2 = £160, and the discounted premium is £144, before any other charges the question specifies.

Two errors are worth looking for. Multiplying £80,000 by 2 forgets that the rate is per £1,000. Subtracting £10 treats a percentage discount as a cash amount. Once the method is secure, change the sum insured or the rate and explain which input moved the answer. Real pricing involves far more factors than this; the exercise is about order of operations and units.

How to prepare for CII IF2

Follow one fictional policy through the business: the risk information, the cover, the wording, the premium, the policy's servicing and a claim. At each stage write the question being answered and the outcome that covers it. Doing this for two or three main classes of general insurance gives you a working map of the syllabus.

For each product, write a short explanation you could give a customer: what the cover is for and which facts would need checking before saying more. When you get a question wrong, label the error as product, wording, calculation, process or information handling; each needs a different repair. How to study for CII IF1–IF4 covers enrolment materials and an exercise for each unit.

How Qualifico supports CII IF2

Qualifico provides IF2 practice questions and flashcards, including premium calculations and the less technical outcomes such as data protection and customer service. Mixed sets help you practise switching between parts of the business. Your Qualifico score tells you about the questions you attempted, not how CII will mark you.

Where IF2 fits

As an option unit, IF2 adds 15 credits. It does not meet the core requirement on its own, so it is normally taken with IF1 and one other option. If you are choosing between IF2 and a narrower unit, compare its breadth with IF3's underwriting focus and IF4's claims focus.

Official resources and next step

Use the current syllabus, exam guide and study-text updates on the IF2 unit page, and check what your enrolment already includes before buying extra revision aids. If you have not yet sat the core unit, start with the IF1 exam guide.
